Sexually transmitted diseases or “STDs” commonly affect anyone without regard to age, wealth, gender, income, etc. Condoms offer the best protection, but even they are not 100% effective. And a partner can carry a disease without even knowing it—there may be no outward sign of infection at all.
The only way to accurately detect some STDs is through medical testing, primarily blood tests.
Any kind of sex can spread STDs, and some of these illnesses are yours forever, like herpes and HIV. This isn’t meant to scare anyone. Such news may seem very negative and can even be upsetting, but learning about the risks is not as upsetting as finding out you have a disease that you can never get rid of. If not treated, some STDs can lead to infertility and even death.
