About Our Pediatric Service Providers

david carlson mdDr. David Carlson, MD
For over 30 years, Dr. Carlson has practiced medicine in Garland, while raising three kids of his own. Many patients that started seeing him when they were infants are now bringing their own children to him.

While treating an illness and its symptoms is critical, he places an emphasis on preventative medicine. “I am a common-sense doctor,” he says. “I try to cover all the bases and talk about what can be done to keep my patients well, no matter their age.” An avid collector, Dr. Carlson has filled each room of the practice with curiosities guaranteed to stimulate imagination and keep children from being bored.

It’s Dr. Carlson’s rule to take ample time with each patient to make sure nothing gets overlooked during a visit and ease parents’ anxieties about their children’s health.

BestCare’s Pediatric Services

well-child-exams

Well Child Exams

Well-child visits allow parents to check up on their child’s health. During these exams, our providers will give any vaccines that are due, check your child’s growth and development, and test vision and hearing starting at age 4.

Asthma and Allergies

Asthma and Allergies

Asthma and allergies are some of the most common childhood illnesses, but they’re also highly treatable. Diagnosing and controlling these conditions in young kids can prevent trips to the emergency room, hospital stays, missed workdays for parents, and, most importantly, anguish and discomfort on the part of your child.

Immunizations

Immunizations

BestCare Garland offers vaccinations that are proven safe and prevent a host of deadly diseases, including measles, tetanus, meningitis, and influenza. We’re so lucky to live in a time when we can give this gift to our children, and working together we may even eradicate these diseases, as we did with smallpox and polio types 2 and 3.

Sports Physicals

Sports Physicals

Preparticipation physical exams maximize the health of athletes and their safe participation in sports by detecting conditions that predispose the athlete to injury or illness. In this evaluation, our providers can provide strategies to prevent injuries.

Newborn Examinations

Newborn Examinations

The newborn exam is ideally performed within 48 hours after birth. Our physician or PA will carefully check your baby’s vital signs, looking for normal function of all systems and any signs of illness or birth defects.

Adolescent Medicine

Adolescent Medicine

Teenagers face unique medical and emotional issues. Our compassionate pediatric care providers can help them deal with topics like reproductive health, drugs, eating disorders, irregular periods, mood changes, questions about sexual identity, and issues at home or school.

ADHD and ADD Evaluation and Treatment

ADHD/ADD Evaluation and Treatment

If you’re worried about signs of impulsivity, distraction, or hyperactivity in your child, your pediatric care providers can help you determine if an ADHD/ADD diagnosis makes sense, or if something else is going on. You, your child, your child’s school, other caregivers, and your healthcare provider will all work together to assess your child’s behavior, and our doctor or Certified PA will give your child a physical exam and take a medical history to rule out other issues.

Same Day Sick Visits

Same Day Sick Visits

Some conditions can’t wait for a regular appointment, so we offer same-day sick visits. If your child fits these descriptions, it’s a good idea to come into the office right away:

  • Your child is under 2 months old and has a fever higher than 100.4°F
  • Your child is over 2 months old and has a fever that lasts longer than two days and causes malaise
  • Your child has a fever of 104°F or higher
  • Your child complains of localized abdominal pain

If your child has a seizure, is in shock, may be poisoned, or was involved in a traumatic accident, it’s best to go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.

Child Nutrition

Nutrition

Nutritional decisions are health decisions, and helping your child receive the nutrients critical for growth, development, and a robust immune system sets them up for a lifetime of good health. Although dietary needs, appetites, and tastes vary widely throughout childhood, our pediatric healthcare providers can help you with evidence-based information to consistently provide your child with healthy options from all the major food groups.

Parenting Tips

Parenting Tips

With our years of experience, we have seen it all when it comes to parents and kids. Our pediatric healthcare providers can assist you with practical ways to promote your child’s development, positive parenting, safety, and health at each stage of your child’s life. It never hurts to ask!

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding as the sole source of nutrition for your baby for about 6 months and can be continued for as long as both mother and baby desire it… but it’s not always as simple as it sounds. BestCare can support you as a nursing mother and help you through issues like latching problems, pain during nursing, low production, poor weight gain, breastfeeding equipment, and even the challenge of returning to work or school.

Child Behavior

Child Behavior

Our pediatric specialists are here to help with any concerns about your child’s behavior. Over the years, we’ve worked with countless babies, children, and teens with different developmental profiles, and we can help you understand your child’s unique needs and strengths while identifying support and resources to help them realize their full potential.
